In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that basically can boost your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a few of these.
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a super protein source.
You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you to feel better! Go with these tips instead!

- Get 1/2 sweet onion, finely chopped (food processor works nicely)
- Prepare 1 hot pepper of choice, finely chopped. I used a long hot and left the seeds in, also chopped in the food processor
- You need 1 raw egg, for binding
- Use 1/2 cup Italian style breadcrumbs
- Prepare 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- Take 1/4-1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Take 4 basil leaves, chopped
- Prepare 1 TBS. dried parsley or a bunch of fresh chopped parsley
- Take to taste Salt,
- Get to taste Black pepper,
- Take 1/3 cup milk
- Get 2 TBS. flour, for coating meatballs
Instructions to make Julie’s Spicy Meatballs:
- Mix all ingredients together, except flour, and form into apx. 16 meatballs.
- Coat each meatball in flour by rolling it around on a plate. This wonderful cooking tip comes from Tony Danza’s meatball recipe! This prevents sticking while they fry.
- Brown the meatballs by frying in a pan for about 8-10 minutes, turning once. I prefer frying in bacon grease for added flavor, but any oil will do.
- Finish cooking meatballs in a pot of your favorite tomato sauce (homemade is best! See my recipe for homemade tomato sauce), simmering (covered) for at least one hour. The longer they simmer, the better they are!
- Serve with spaghetti or any other pasta, using the reserve of sauce for your pasta.
- Buon appetito! 🇮🇹
